[Premium] US Market Breadth Update

July 15, 2018

From the desk of Tom Bruni @BruniCharting

Market Breadth has been a hot topic as of late, which is why we've talked about it here, here, here, and here over the last month. Last week we discussed market breadth from a global perspective by measuring the trends and momentum readings of stock markets from all around the world, as well as the US sectors and sub-sectors. Today we're going to expand on that by looking at the internals specific to the US stock market. I will warn you in advance that this is a bit of a long post, but I don't want to give the bears a chance to say that we're relying too heavily on one or two charts to support our conclusion.

Nasdaq 100 Stocks Breaking Out

July 13, 2018

The Nasdaq 100 just hit another all-time high, as did the amount of people quoting the percentage of the index's gains that are from its top five components. While that makes for a good headline and soundbite, it's not really all that actionable. What is actionable is the chart below, which we spoke about in early June.

Large-Cap Healthcare Coming Back To Life?

July 9, 2018

From the desk of Tom Bruni @BruniCharting

In 2018 the trend of small-cap Healthcare out-performance over its large-cap counterparts accelerated aggressively, with the small-cap ETF $PSCH returning 30.50% YTD and the large-cap ETF $XLV up a meager 1.70%.

Despite XLV's under-performance relative to small-caps and the broader market, some signs of improvement have been developing over the last few weeks. As we can see in the ratio of $XLV / $SPY below, prices retested their 2017 lows as momentum diverged positively. This suggests at the very least we don't want to be short on a relative basis.

[Premium] Market Breadth Update

July 6, 2018

From the desk of Tom Bruni @BruniCharting

Throughout April and May we've discussed market breadth improvements that have us bullish on equity prices both in the US and globally. Today I want to perform a simple exercise to see how the data we're looking at has developed over the last two months or so of trading.

[Premium] Bulls Beta Hope This Holds

June 28, 2018

From the desk of Tom Bruni @BruniCharting

One important part of the bull case for stocks in the US has been the leadership we've seen from small and mid-caps, growth areas of the market, and high beta stocks, however, we're starting to see some short-term deterioration in these leaders on an absolute and relative basis. Today I want to quickly look at the relationship between high beta stocks and their low volatility counterparts.

[Premium] Trade Opportunities In These USD Pairs

June 22, 2018

From the desk of Tom Bruni @BruniCharting

Last month we wrote about short opportunities in GBP/JPY and AUD/JPY that took some time to develop, but are finally starting to work. Today we're going to focus on the US Dollar as the Dollar Index is up roughly 8% since bottoming on February 15th, and even moreso against many currencies not represented in the index. While the Dollar Index may be extended a bit in the short-term, there have been several moves that look like the start of long-term trends that we want to be a part of.

Restaurant Stocks Delivering The Gains

June 7, 2018

The broader market has resolved its range to the upside led by several groups, among them Consumer Discretionary, which is hitting all-time highs on an absolute basis and also relative to the Consumer Staples sector. Within that group, the Restaurant industry continues to deliver strong returns. An example is Texas Roadhouse up 20% YTD on top of an already massive ~ 1300% gain from its 2008 lows.

To show how broad-based this rally's been, I want to highlight two stocks on the opposite ends of the spectrum, Denny's, the breakfast chain, and RCI Hospitality Holdings, the owner/operator of nightclubs.

Technology Is Beginning A New Leg Higher

June 3, 2018

When the biggest sector in the S&P500 representing 25% of the entire index makes an all-time daily, weekly and monthly closing high, it's probably worth paying attention. I also hear the lazy people talk about how Technology is being led by just a few names. This is simply not true as the Technology Equal-weight index is also breaking out to new highs. We're seeing a broad based rally in Tech, and it's not something new.

I've been pounding the table on Technology because it's been outperforming on an absolute basis, but also on a relative basis. Tech is not just going up, it's beating all the other sectors. Here is the Equally-weighted Tech Index Fund $RYT breaking out of a 4-month base to new all-time highs. New highs are a characteristic of uptrends, not downtrends:

[Premium] Deep Dive Into The Biotech Sector

May 21, 2018

From the desk of Tom Bruni @BruniCharting

If you've been reading our content over these last few weeks, you've likely noticed we've been performing a lot of deep dives on the sectors we want to be involved in on the long side like Solar, Energy (premium), Retail, and Software (premium). Healthcare in general has been a laggard and the Medical Device space continues to lead, but now we're seeing Biotechnology start to break out as well. In this post we're focused on the equal-weighted Biotech ETF $XBI, as the cap-weighted $IBB is lagging significantly and remains weak. This out-performance by the equal-weight sector ETF signifies a broad-based rally is underway, so we're looking for the best names in the sector to take advantage of this theme.
